As a company that was created and established by new immigrants from the USA, we are aware of the difficulties new immigrants in Israel have. Among those difficulties is the uncomfortable feelings you might have when you need a moving service without knowing the language and the culture…
As an effort to make it a bit easier for you, we collected some important information about the storage services in Israel, Hopefully this information will be useful for you and will help you make the right decision regarding your specific storage needs:
Storage Services- What are the main elements you must check?
Concrete Facilities – you don't need to be a genius to understand that the Israeli heat in the summer may be harmful to your goods and belongings. Therefore, it is extremely important that the storage building would be made of concrete including its ceiling, rather than any other material such as Asbest (which is hazardous and illegal in Israel), any kind of tile ceiling, tin containers or tin sheds. These materials are not heat resistant and they won't protect your heat sensitive items like pictures, laminate, LCD screens, CD's and records, computers and baby's items made of plastic or rubber.
Clean environment
Pay attention to storage facilities that are located close to Food manufactory or rural area. Those places are likely to have rodents' problem that is very difficult to solve and get rid of.
A Storage unit that is hermetically closed
There are storage units located in a big hangar (15'-20' high). The hangar is divided to inner rooms. Those rooms do not have a ceiling and the room is open on its' top all the way to the hangar's ceiling. In some of the storage facilities out there, the main doors of the storage are open through most of the working hours, and cats or doves are free to enter the facilities and are likely to leave there feces or lice…
What kind of Insurance is important to have?
AA place that provides storage services has to offer personal insurance policy that shows the storage unit number, customer name and the value of the insurance (amount of coverage).
The insurance has to be on the insurance company responsibility rather than on the storage company itself. There is a chance that in an insurance event, the storage company will file for bankruptcy due to the damages and you will have no one to compensate you for your lost valuable goods. It is important to make sure that the insurance offered to you will include at least those 4 covers: Fire damages, water damages, burglary and earthquake.
How much does it cost?
Calculating costs: Most storage companies have different storage units in different sizes. The bigger the unit is, the more expensive it is. You, as a customer, have to receive the most appropriate room that will fit your household goods and belongings. In a too small unit, not all your goods would be able to fit in whereas in a too big unit, there will be an unused space that will cost you more without any reason.
Furthermore, the storage prices are determined usually by the period you will need to use the storage unit. Long term storage customers will enjoy more attractive prices and eventually will pay less then the short term ones.
The storage price is based on a monthly basis and is affected by – Price per cubic meter, the size of the storage unit and the period of the rental (short term as apposed to long term rental).
Price per cubic meter – the common pricing method for storage services in Israel is by the cubic meter (1 meter length X 1 meter width X 1 meter height).
Storage unit size: Usually, there are small storage units (between 6-13 CBM), middle size units (between 15-25 CBM) and big storage units (between 30-40 CBM).
Storage rental period: a rental period between up to 3 months is considered a short period and a period of 6 months and up, is considered as a long term storage period.
Attention, customers! The basic interest of the moving company is to take as bigger room as possible so the unloading your goods will be easier and shorter.
The basic interest of the storage company is to rent you as bigger room as possible and to earn more money per month.
So who is the one who will protect my interest as a customer?
The answer for this question is simple. You are the ones who should be on top of things and make sure that everything is going well and to your fully satisfaction. That is why it is very important to read the things that are most important to check and what to be aware of. No need to worry, though. We are here to guide you and give you the best suggestions we believe will help you the most.
A moving event is generally a big fuss and a hassle. It is a hard job for the porters and when the goods are coming to a storage place it's even harder. The porters need to organize the goods one on top of the other, to use the space to its optimum, they have to climb on a ladder and put the fragile items on top of the other stuff. They need to use all the way up to the top in order to use all the available space. Not all movers have the experience nor the patience for this kind of job. Not all the movers would like to "spend" time and some of them will prefer to put your items in the storage unit as fast as possible and run to their next customer. As earlier mentioned, the monthly storage room is related to the size of the room. Therefore, if the movers will not organize the goods in patience, he might cause damages to your belongings and will force you to use a bigger room than actually needed.
It is also extremely important to note than when the customer contacts a storage company, most of them will usually give him a low estimate of the volume of his goods. The customer likes the low prices he hears and in this way, unfortunately, the storage company "traps" the customer and at the day of the move the customer finds out that he needs a much bigger room than what he was told in the first place. But now he has no choice, he is already in the storage facility with the full truck…
In some storage companies you will find out that the size of storage unit is actually smaller than what is being told and most of the customers will not even notice this fact as they don't measure the room.
Some suggested steps to take:
1. Choose a familiar and popular storage company and make a visit on site. Do not make a decision only by your phone conversation with the company or internet information.
2. Get a written price quote from the storage company with an estimated volume of your goods and an obligation from the storage company to provide you with a unit according to your needs.
3. Look for a company that works with storage facilities on a regular basis. If the mover asks you what a "cube", it is most likely that he has no experience whatsoever with this kind of job.
4. It is mostly recommended that an estimator from the moving company will actually come to your home and see the items (this is relevant to a 3-4 bedroom apartments and bigger).
5. A good moving company will provide you with boxes as well as written price quote that will have details for all the service. (You can get recommendations for a reliable moving company from the storage company you have chosen or chose one by yourself).
6. Make a comparison between the estimated volume given by the storage company and those that was given by the moving company. If the gap between them is big, start checking closely and understand where this difference is coming from. Although you need to be cautious, do not forget that even professionals can make mistakes.
7. At the day of the move and without interfere the moving crew, make some quick glances in the storage room and make sure that the movers organize your goods in an appropriate and optimal way. Make sure that the space is used to its maximum.
Some useful tips:
Refrigerator has to be cleaned and dry before it reaches the storage facilities. Make sure to leave the door open to avoid mold.
Washing machine should also be clean and dry and its moor should be left open. In order to dry remaining water from its pipes, you can slightly pull it to the side and let the water come out.
Boxes should be fully loaded. Do not over load the boxes to prevent their opening but try to fill them to their maximum capacity. As general, heavy items like books should be put in smaller boxes whereas general items should be put in regular boxes.
Make sure to write on each box its content in order to make it easier in its orientation. This will help you in organizing your goods efficiently after ending your storage needs.
It is also recommended to write "fragile" on the boxes that contain breakable items.
It is highly recommended not to store personal documents like I.D, passport and as such. If you decide to store them anyway, make sure to mark the box in a big sticker with its content. This box should be put near the storage door, in the front, in case you would need those items during the storage period.
This principle is good also for seasonal clothing like summer clothes, winter clothes, etc'.
It is important to ask the moving team to wrap all the furniture and the mattresses with shrink wrap in order to protect them during the move and during the storage period.
Leather sofas are recommended to wrap with sheet or blanket first and then with shrink wrap.
We recommend using a moving company that you are familiar with or one that you have recommendations of. You can use our recommendations, as well, and get a price quote from the best moving companies we offer.
Good Luck!
